The Youtube Video Hour is an occasional event on the Precipice Games Livestream. The audience suggests videos by posting links to them (at appropriate times) and the streamer selects one at random and plays it.

How suggesting works

The part everyone MUST read

When it's time for a set of suggestions to be put forward, the streamer will clear the chat (usually with a bit of forewarning, though surprise rounds may happen). Once the chat is cleared, everyone posts links of the form http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxxxxxxx until the streamer says "Stop", or words to that effect.

The internal mechanics

At the moment of clearing chat, the streamer picks a random number by looking at the last digit of the elapsed seconds display on the current video. 0 means 10, anything else is that number. Since the random number picked will be between 1 and 10, if there are more than 10 suggestions already up, you're wasting your time.

After stopping the suggestions, the streamer will count links from the first until he or she reaches that numbered link, and that video will be viewed next. Outside of the suggestion rounds, chat is under normal guidelines.

The limitations

You should NOT repeat yourself during the same suggestion round UNLESS the streamer says to do so (usually because there are few suggestions). IF the streamer allows repeating yourself, make sure you don't get two of your own links in a row, otherwise your links will be disqualified for that round and you will get a five minute ban, possibly preventing you from participating in the next round. Incidentally, this specifically allows you to post multiple different links, as long as you don't post the same one twice.

Similarly, DO NOT repeat videos that have already been played in the same Youtube Video Hour. We want to watch many videos, not the same one over and over again. If you manage to repeat yourself, the streamer will let you know (and pick the next or previous link in the list).

Mutations

Occasionally, the situation will warrant mutating the rules. The best mutations will be repeated or, if possible, used as the mainline rules in future. Here are the mutations we've used so far:

Relaxed

The Relaxed mutation is for slow times when there are few suggestions from few suggesters. Under the slow mutation, you can post videos at any time and the streamer will make up a queue and watch every video in first in, first out order. If the rate of suggestions gets too high, the mutation can be cancelled and the normal YVH rules come back into play.

Video length and content

Keep the content PG-13, whatever it is; otherwise, anything goes. The video MUST not be less than a minute long (if it is, there's not enough time to get the next round of suggestions done). It SHOULD also not be more than 5 minutes long, and MUST not be longer than 8 minutes (we want many videos on YVH, not just one or two long ones).

Denied content

Do not post:

  • Rickroll (or anythingRoll, really)
  • Friday
  • shitty videos. Use your judgement here -- if it's obviously shit, don't post it. We're supposed to be sharing videos we find interesting, not trolling each other

If you do, you will receive an immediate 24h ban, removing you from participating in YVH.
